Welcome to the GoldnI Evening News Roundup (GENR)!!
This is a new diary series where we will discuss the most important stories in the world of GoldnI. Who is GoldnI, you might be wondering? GoldnI is that gorgeous, sexy, Jewish American Princess blogger, the progressive Democrat who grew up in the Bible Belt but now finds herself stuck in the vast frozen tundra otherwise known as Upstate New York. Doesn't that sound like an exciting topic?!
Before I go on, a caveat...this is a sandbox EXCLUSIVELY for the GoldnI supporters. This is OUR space in which to rah-rah for GoldnI. Please don't come in here if you're going to be antagonistic, go find your own sandbox instead. Thank you :)
Here are the important stories from the past few days:
1. Football
What I have to say about football is really important, so you all must listen closely:
Look at the 6-2 Tennessee Titans y'all!
We're having a great season almost in spite of ourselves. We're tied with Pittsburgh for 3rd in the AFC, only behind New England and Indianapolis. Vince Young is having problems, but we've got a great run game going, led by LenDale White. And of course, the defense, led by Albert Haynesworth, Kyle Vanden Bosch, and by "#53, Keeeeith...BULLUCK!", is kicking ass. The defense is doing so well that Titans fans everywhere are saying, "Pacman who?"
I wish I could say the same for my Vanderbilt Commodores. We're 5-4, and we pulled a huge upset over #6 South Carolina. In any other year, all we'd need to do is win one more game and then we'd get a bowl bid, but since the entire SEC is strong this year, we made need to go up to 7-5. Which means that between Kentucky, Tennessee, and Wake Forest, we need to win two. That's an incredibly tall order.
It's my dad's fault. He jinxed Vandy right before the Florida game by both a) saying that we were due for a win at The Swamp, and by b) going ahead and buying tickets for the Music City Bowl, hoping that it will be Vandy vs. UMiami (where my little brother goes). Buying bowl tickets when you're 5-4 dooms you to 5-7 IMHO.
But here's where Vandy and the Titans are connected. Just recently Vandy WR Earl Bennett broke the SEC record for most career receptions. He's a junior, and it's looking very likely that he'll go to the NFL after this season. Last I heard, he's slated to go mid to late first round. I really think if that happens, the Titans should seriously consider drafting him. The Titans' biggest issue right now is that Vince Young does not have a "go-to" receiver, someone who can consistently catch the ball in coverage and then explode with it. Earl Bennett proved he could do that under Jay Cutler. Imagine what would happen if an even better QB were throwing to him!
Titans front office...we need a WR. His name is Earl!
Moving from real life to the computer, my fantasy football team is committing some serious pwnage right now. I'd had Vince Young and Drew Brees as my starting QBs. Then they both had a Bye in Week 4, so I had to start Steve McNair and find another QB. I looked at who was available in my league...the one with the best numbers was Rex Grossman, but I wasn't about to touch that. The next one was Derek Anderson of Cleveland. I didn't know anything about him, but I added him anyway. He turned out to be quite possibly one of the biggest Fantasy studs this season. And now that Brees has gotten over his slump, I can start them both and let VY be my backup. My WRs and TE are doing well, and on Sunday I accidentally started the Detroit defense rather than Baltimore's, resulting in one of the best mistakes I've ever made in my life!
2. Law School
I'm in the process of applying to law school right now. I've gotten in all my applications, taken the LSAT, and written my personal statement (finally getting it right on the 67th draft). But now I have to nag two of my professors to get their rec letters in. I feel bad, but I'm starting to get e-mails from the schools letting me know that they'll start reviewing my application as soon as they get those letters. One of my professors is just plain flaky and the other one has pneumonia right now, so I don't know what the status is of either letter, and it's driving me crazy.
3. Shopping
In case you're interested, Victoria's Secret sells really cute pajamas this time of year (not to mention diamond-encrusted bras). They make really nice gifts, either for yourself or for someone else.
I'm going to NYC to do some holiday shopping myself in December once my exams are over. We're going to start at Woodbury Commons, the outlet mall to end all outlet malls, before heading into the city itself. While we're there, my mother and I were thinking of catching a show. She wants to see the "Legally Blonde" musical, while I want to see "Jersey Boys." Has anyone here seen either show, or have an opinion?
My favorite place in NYC is 57th and Lexington. Bloomingdale's on one side and Dylan's Candy Bar on the other!
4. The Greatest Blog in the World (other than Daily Kos)
My own baby blog, Silence Isn't Golden, is quicky approaching its four-month birthday. Considering that every other blog I've attempted to start has not lasted for longer than two weeks, this is a pretty big deal! I'm averaging around 35 hits a day, although it was a lot higher during the Nashville mayor's race. The night of the runoff election, I got 100 hits in less than an hour. So go to my blog and help me run that number up!
